FAQ

Questions, answered.

Everything you might want to know before, during, and after your trip.

Booking & payment

How do I book?
Choose your dates, hotel, film, and options on the reservation page and send a request. We then verify your identity and hotel; once approved, we send you an invoice. Requests are open until 7 days before pick-up, and availability is limited, so earlier is safer.
Why do you verify my identity?
Because we lend you a valuable camera. After you submit a request, you'll receive a secure link to verify a government-issued ID, such as a passport. It takes a few minutes, and the link is valid for 48 hours. No documents are uploaded on this website.
Which hotels do you deliver to?
We deliver to verified hotels of a qualifying class in Japan. Enter your hotel name on the reservation page and we'll confirm during screening. If you're unsure, email us before you book.
What does it cost?
3–4 days: $150/day, 5–9 days: $130/day, 10–14 days: $100/day, in US dollars. One roll of Kodak Portra 400, developing, and digital scans are included. Extra rolls are $35 each; damage protection is $20/day.
When do I pay?
Nothing is charged when you submit a request. Once your identity and hotel are verified and we approve the booking, we send you an invoice for the full rental fee.
Can I cancel?
After approval but before the camera ships, you receive a full refund. Once it has shipped, we can't accept cancellations, changes, or refunds. See Article 8 of the Terms of Service.

Camera & film

What will I receive?
A Leica M6 with a Voigtländer NOKTON classic 40mm F1.4 lens, loaded with Kodak Portra 400, with a strap attached. Everything arrives in a box that doubles as your prepaid return package.
How many rolls do I need?
One roll (36 frames) is included. We suggest about one roll per three days; you can add rolls for $35 each, up to three in total.
Can I use it in the rain?
Please don't. It's a precision vintage camera, so avoid rain, snow, sand, and heavy dust. If it gets wet, tell us when you return it.
What if I damage it?
Tell us when you return it. With damage protection ($20/day), your liability for accidental damage is capped at $500; without it, you cover the full repair cost. Loss or non-return carries a fixed penalty of USD 6,000 (Article 6).

Delivery & returns

How do I receive the camera?
We deliver it to your hotel by your pick-up date. Collect it at the front desk when you check in.
How do I return it?
Rewind the film, pack everything into the original box, attach the prepaid label, and drop it at a nearby convenience store (FamilyMart or 7-Eleven), or leave it at your hotel front desk. The guide shows each step.
What if my return is late?
Email us as soon as you know. A late return costs USD 300 per day (Article 7).

Photos

When will I get my photos?
After we confirm the camera has been returned, we develop and scan every frame. You'll receive the high-resolution scans digitally within about a week.
Do I get the negatives?
No. The service is complete once the digital files are delivered. Physical negatives aren't returned and are destroyed after a storage period (Article 9).
